Welcome to the Spring 2020 semester at UMass Amherst

Hello. I’m Chancellor
Kumble Subbaswamy, and I want to extend warm
greetings to our campus community, including the
new students starting with us this semester. Welcome, everyone, to the 2020s. As we embark on a fresh
decade, the challenges we face as a
society will require new levels of
creativity and passion to forge unconventional
solutions. That imperative fits perfectly
with the essence of our UMass Amherst culture,
and it is reflected in the signs and banners
you will see celebrating this revolutionary spirit. As a world class
university, we are dedicated to preparing
students to engage to the world in bold
and innovative ways, to “Be Revolutionary.” This spirit is evident
in recent developments. Our Mount Ida campus now serves
as a center for experiential learning in Greater Boston,
so please incorporate this into your summer
internship planning if you have housing needs. The strategic expansion of
our University Without Walls program is providing support
for students at every stage of their educational
and professional lives, offering courses in
a number of modes, including face- to- face,
immersive, online, and hybrid. And for the fifth straight
year, UMass Amherst was named one of Princeton
Review’s Top 50 Green Colleges. I encourage you to participate
this spring in our campus task forces on carbon mitigation
and climate resilience. I’m also pleased to report
that student success, as evident in our four-
year graduation rate, continues to shine rising
to 77 percent, a 10 percent rise in six years. In Athletics, a
shout out goes out to our women’s basketball team
for posting a historic winning streak! Shot clock is off– And I want to offer a special
welcome to Dr. Brandi Hephner LaBanc, our new Vice
Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life. Thank you for all you do for
our community, and Go UMass!
