Vestavia Hills Elementary East playground to reopen with temporary fix

AFFECTED PLAY.>>THE KIDS WOULD COME HOME AND
TALK ABOUT HOW THEY COULD NOT
USE A PLAYGROUND.>>EARLIER THIS MONTH THE SCHOOL
DISTRICT DECIDED TO CLOSE PART
OF THIS PLAYGROUND AT THE SCHOOL
ON TUESDAYS THROUGH SUNDAYS. THE PROBLEM, GOLF BALLS WHIZZING
BY FROM NEARBY THE COUNTRY CLUB.>>I UNDERSTOOD THE DECISION BY
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS TO CLOSE
THE PLAYGROUND BECAUSE IT IS A
SAFETY ISSUE. MARY: THE DISTRICT ANNOUNCED IT
IS BACK OPEN STARTING NEXT WEEK. THE COUNTRY CLUB PLACED A RANGER
ON THE THIRD HOLE TO MONITOR
ACTIVITY AND ENSURE GOLFERS
FOLLOW THE RULE CHANGE.>>MY UNDERSTANDING IS THEY
CHANGE THE RULES SO THAT GOLFERS
STANDING ON THE TEA HAS TWO PAUL
— PLAY THE BALL LEFT AWAY FROM
THE SCHOOL WITH AN IRON SHOT OR
A SHORTER CLUB SHOT. MARY: THE CITY SCHOOL
SUPERINTENDENT SAID THE RANGER
WILL STAND PLACED TEMPORARILY
WHILE THE COUNTRY CLUB CONTINUES
TO DEVELOP A LONG-TERM PLAN. WHILE PARENTS ARE HAPPY FOR THE
SHORT TERM FIX, SOME STILL HAVE
CONCERNS OF HUMAN ERROR. PARENTS INSTEAD ARE ASKING FOR A
PERMANENT PHYSICAL BARRIER TO
PROTECT STUDENTS.>>WHETHER THAT IS REINSTALLING,
REPLANTING SOME TREES THAT
CREATE THAT BARRIER, WHETHER
IT’S A NET, I LEAVE THAT UP TO
THE COUNTRY CLUB TO DECIDE. MARY: STILL, PARENTS ARE
THANKFUL FOR NOW, SO THEIR KIDS
CAN GET OUT AND PLAY. IN VESTAVIA HILLS, MARY
