Jumping Higher, Kiteboard Tutorial (inc: landing, heli-loops, launching, conditions & safety)

This tutorial explains how to jump higher;
for kiters who can land small jumps, but have issues with boosting higher. Many kiters easily land their small jumps.
But, as soon as they go a bit higher, they sink on landing. There is a good reason for this. After a large jump, you spend more time descending,
of course. And during that longer descent, the kite will
tend to creep upwind – it can even overfly onto your upwind side. Then, when you steer with the front hand,
for landing, the kite barely returns to the edge of the window. And at the edge of the window, the kite won’t
have enough lift to keep you on the surface. To land nicely, you need your kite to hit
this sweet spot at the exact moment you touch down. The sweet spot is close to 12, but slightly
deeper in the window, between low and medium power. This area gives the most lift and the most
forgiving landings. As mentionend, the edge of the window, doesn’t
provide enough force and your kite may even front stall out of the sky. Deep in the high power zone, you get plenty
of force – but it’s mainly sideways acceleration, not lift – due to the low angle of the kite. Down the sides of the window, further from
12, you also get minimal lift due to the kite’s low angle. Hitting the sweet spot on a small jump is
pretty simple, because the kite hasn’t had time to creep upwind away from it But as you jump higher returning to the sweet
spot is more tricky. Many people are tempted to dive the kite earlier
after sinking a few landings. However, steering early and gently, creeps
the kite lower down and further from the sweet spot. You generally get closer by steering late
and hard, as this arcs the kite around in front of you. But the simplest way of hitting the middle
of the sweet spot is to use a double movement on landing. Launch your jump, then keep the kite around
12. Keep the bar in to slow the kite from creeping upwind. Then, before landing, steer the kite firmly
with the back hand. This positions the kite, so you can dive it through the middle of the
sweet spot, with the front hand. The double movement is the best way for most
kiters to land large jumps. If your timing is correct, you can land large
jumps with minimal impact. You also have the option to weave across 12
a few times, to stop the kite overflying. Then, steer firmly towards the sweet spot
on landing. Another method for hitting the sweetspot is
the heli-loop. The heli loop is a slightly more risky technique,
but if perfectly timed, it can give very forgiving landings. The reason this kind of loop is so forgiving,
is because the kite has crept upwind during hangtime, so it’s possible to complete a
loop high in the window. To heli loop, wait with the kite above your
head. Then just before landing, steer as hard as possible for a small loop. The direction you choose to loop is important. Looping away from 12 is less forgiving as
the kite will fly lower. Looping towards 12 keeps the kite centred, closer to the sweet
spot. When most people jump, the kite will tend
to drift across 12 a little. In this scenario, looping with the front hand
will give a softer landing. If your kite is very close to 12, you can
steer with the back hand a few seconds before landing, then loop the sweet spot with your
front hand. Or, if you prefer, you can steer with the
front hand a little, and then loop with the back hand. Now let’s look at how to launch a higher
jump in the first place. To jump higher, you must start to ride in
faster. But at the same time, it’s essential you
keep a firm edge for as long as possible. A firm edge means the board is cutting into
the water, producing lots of spray. If you loose that edge, even at the last fraction
of a second, you will loose jump height. The challenge is that the faster you ride,
the harder it is to keep your edge. Luckily, there are some tricks that will help you. As you build speed start applying more weight
to the back foot. Pressuring a smaller section of the board,
makes it’s easier to cut into the water. If you apply weight more evenly, you will
probably loose your edge. It also helps to keep your legs bent and body
crunched during the run up. So you can move your legs in and out with the surface. Your
legs act like suspension keeping contact with the water. Being compact also helps a lot at the moment
of launch. As the kite is ripping you upwards, you are then able to extend your body, and
push down with your legs. This gives a final bit of edging, that can
work wonders for your jump height. Once you master holding an edge at increased
speed, it’s time to squeeze the maximum power out of your kite. You should already know that steering to 12
slowly gives less lift. And, steering to 12 quickly gives more lift. To get a bit more power, you can begin with
the kite lower. This gives more room to send the kite up through
high power. Let’s put this all together and run-through
the whole technique. This is all filmed in 18 to 22knots, so we
can focus on using technique, rather than using overpowering wind. Start by lowering your kite slightly and speeding
up. Lean back, bend your knees and contract your
body. Pull in the bar as much as you can handle. Pressure the back of the board to keep it
cutting into the water. Steer the kite up as quickly as possible. When the kite hits 12 pull in the bar, and
at the same time extend your body and stomp down hard. After take off, make sure the kite sits close
to 12. Keep the bar in to maximise lift and keep
the bar straight to avoid accidental steering. To stop rotation relax your legs and shoulders
back, and push the harness towards the kite. As you descend, keep your eye on the approaching
water. About 4 meters before landing steer the kite
with the back hand. Then, a meter or 2 before landing dive the
kite with the front hand across 12. You should feel extra lift and then start
moving downwind quickly. Point the board downwind, touch down with
the tail first, and bend your knees to absorb the impact. Make sure to steer the kite back up before
is dives too low. You can clear 10m, even underpowered, if you
get all of this correct. But, to jump really high you need stronger
wind. Strong wind will help you climb much quicker,
but you will pay a heavy price for any mistakes. That’s why I recommend you practice all
of the skills in this video using very light wind. That’s the best way to minimise your
risks. The surface of the water is also important.
It’s hard to maintain a strong edge on choppy water. The board will keep loosing contact. You need a smooth section to build your speed
and edge pressure. For bonus height, look for flat water followed
by a wave to act as a ramp. Using kickers does require perfect timing. You must build speed, send the kite up, then
pull in the bar, exactly as you hit the kicker. If you’re starting to boost higher, it’s

  3. very technical subject and pretty hard to explain on a video so thumbs up for that, you did very well where many people failed. I don't agree 100% (let's say 90% 😉 ) but still, it's a pretty good video. I guess I wouldn't have chosen a rebel for this topic as I find the piloting timing a bit different than most kites when it comes to jumping. Good job anyway!

    This is going to help me a lot. I started kitesurfing last December 2018 and started to work on jumping this June through present.
    To many occasions my kite would front stall after trying for a big jump and just leaving the kite at 12, the kite would front stall then invert and then crash. I would have to take it back to the beach to fix the mess.

    Right before takeoff I tend to lose speed quite a lot since I edge so hard.. This seems to be a problem because I don’t get as high as I probably could. Do you have a solution to this issue? Maybe I edge for “too long” and lose my momentum? Or maybe I edge with too much effort which results in a low speed? Maybe you are familiar with this and can help me out. I would appreciate!!

Great video, I tend to sheet out all the way on the run up to build max power/max edge then pull in to max at take off, also, with a downloop or heil loop sheet out 2-4 inch on the bar on the way down to get the kite to go back over you ready to take it to the sweet spot in the video, or you could choke the kite and have it stall a tad in front in massive wind, just my two cents worth. 😀👌

  9. Thanks for an excellent video. I tried my first heliloop a few weeks ago. I think I started a kite loop instead by accident and abborted early as I got pulled really hard which scared me. Would this be due to initiating the heliloop too early or steering in the wrong direction into the wind window? I'm pretty sure I steered with my front hand, though it all happened very quickly and it shocked me enough to not try again until I understand the theory more (BTW in hindsight it wasn't the best conditions for practicing as while the water was flat it was 30-40 knots – was riding a 7 meter Evo).

I often see very good riders doing the pattern edge hard – ride flat – edge again strongly exactly when the kite is hitting twelve. Very mysterious to me and i have no idea how to decompose this technic to understand the timming. I wish you a happy new year !

  12. Unlike some videos made by a well known Greek-Russian, this video explains it very well. The Heli-loop is certainly a trick I didn't know, which comes to good effect; and without too much emphasis on the load-and-pop, which a lot of guys focus too much on and still loose height.

  13. Thank you for this very interesting video. I am very concerned by this topic as I'm stucked at 5-6 meter jump. I try to keep maximum tension in the lines but when sending the kite to 12, it pulls me so hard that I loose my edge.
    So I have a few questions:
    1) Do you go a little bit downwind before sending the kite or do you keep your edge ?
    2) Before launching, do you try to go further upwind (to increase tension) or do you just keep the same edge ?
    3) Before launching, do you send the kite past 12 or do you pull the bar just at 12 ?

  14. Weird tips on having less edge to jump large, the video called "learning to fly" talks about putting more weight on the whole edge to maximize grip for more load.

  15. As a 200lb guy I end up needing big kites…12-14m. I find it really hard to boost more than 15-20 feet with those. Is it just a limit of the kite

    My trouble I'm experiencing now is the timing of he jump.
    Do I: keep the kite lower to get better edge when approaching jump -> bar in half way to produce speed (or like you said all the way in? 🤔) -> send kite to 12 or just past AND THEN push bar out before I pop off water and pull bar in for lift off.
    Do I sheet bar out steer to 12 or just past as it gets to 12 edge hard upwind and pop and sheet in?
    My understanding is: if my bar is sheeted out on steering to 12 it will be on the edge of the window and hence directly at zenneth producing max lift with pop and sheet in.
    If I were to have bar pulled in as much as possible to get speed and send it to 12 sheeted in it would sit further in window thus producing more of a forward downwind trajectory up.
    Would really appreciate your wisdom on this step I csnt get my head around?

  20. That's awesome! When edging before the jump I often hit the water with my bum and legs as I lean back (and lose all and edge speed). I see at 6:20 you almost touch the water but… you don't. Should I try to edge more with the upper body, less with the lower body?

  21. That’s a very good tutorial! However there is something a bit confusing to me: 5 of 4 advanced jumping coaches says that you should not push too hard on the back foot for high boosting (15m up), instead they teach to edge using a more even pressure between back and front foot. Why do you prefer more weight on the back foot?

  23. Lately, when riding in overpowered conditions, I start rotating during the jump. A slow, late fron-roll movement. I have tried different things, but it always comes back in overpowered conditions.

    In normal conditions I don't have this. It is only when going out in strong winds (+30 knots) and when aiming for maximum height.

    Any suggestions?

  24. really nice tutorial. I've been jumping higher but my landings are definitely not smooth yet. I've been trying to look up the heliloops and after watching I am definitely trying it next session, as long as the wind is not too strong obviously. last sessions was like 22-30 with 9m so didn't want to risk it

  25. Great video. I noticed when you heli looped it toward 12, the end of the loop had the kite facing the wrong way to "ride out" – what do you do to avoid that? I think I have enough bravery to heli loop towards 12, but it doesn't seem like it fixes the issue of stopping when you hit the water. The loop the other way seemed better for riding out, since the kite was pointed correctly to ride out at the end of the loop.

Thats the Moment you can lose your Edge easiest. At thus Moment Just before Take of you Seen to extend your arm AS Long AS possible to depower Just dir a fraction of a secound. Exactly at Take Off you pull the Bar in ..

  27. Hi there! Really good and useful video! A quick one: I have experienced a couple of times that the kite (Core XR4) was really going upwind of me to a point where the lift suddenly ends and I was dropping out of the air… Any tips to avoid this? Is it just better pop (more completely stop traveling) or stop the kite earlier (pull bar a bit earlier snd more in the window – I sometimes maybe wait a bit long until the kite is over my head which gives a nice vertical pull ) ?

  28. Kite-Surf College, thanks for the tutorials, sorry if my question is covered in another video. As I've started boosting higher, sometimes I find myself in a very slow, un-controllable front roll (typically end up landing on my backside). I've tried bringing my legs up at the launch, I've tried the classic "look over your shoulder" in the direction opposite to the spin, still no luck. Any advice.
