How To Get A Nose Piercing With Brian Keith Thompson Of Body Electric | Macro Beauty | Refinery29

I like to pierce on the one single exhale. Most of it is all in your head. Pain is temporary. Vanity is forever. My mom has this thing where her grandma would always tell her, “If God wanted a hole on your body, he would’ve put it there.” Just to get my ears pierced, I had to wait until I was in tenth grade. And I begged for them. My name is Melissa and I’m getting a nose piercing today. So I have both ears pierced, but two holes on this side. I had my cartilage done. My nose done and my belly button. I had my nose piercing for a little over a year but I kind of got tired of where the piercing was placed. I really love wearing hoops and mine hung way too low for me. I’m definitely looking forward to going to someone who knows what they’re doing. We’re going to clean you up, mark you up, and then pierce you up. My name is Brian Thompson. I own Body Electric. I’ve been piercing for about ten years now. If my Commanding Officer was to see me now, he would say I was an idiot. This is not in Marine Corps regulation except for my haircut. That’s what drew me to tattooing and piercing is that I could manipulate and change my body the way I wanted to and nobody had a say in it. There’s two sides of piercing. There’s the actually physical act of of piercing and then there’s decorating, knowing where to put it. I am a decorator. Placement is definitely important when it comes to piercing. When you get a piercing done, it shapes your face. If it’s in a weird spot, you might feel uncomfortable or you might feel like you look weird. I don’t myself use a piercing gun. That’s not to say that the gun doesn’t work. It does. But me, if I’m going to decide, I’m going to get pierced with a needle every single day. I’m not going to use the gun. When the piercing gun is used, it is basically using blunt force trauma. It is taking a stud, that is fastened to a point, and using the spring loaded force of that gun to puncture it through your earlobe. You’re going to see the fibers eject from the backside, where the actual jewelry exits. That’s happening to your ear as well. Right after you’re pierced, you’re going to have more swelling. Inflammation causes pain. So then you’re going to have more pain. It’s going to take longer to heal, especially if you have sensitive skin. Now a puncture is going to heal slower than a cut. A needle may be round, but it’s still cutting. It’s basically like a circular, tiny little scalpel. A piercing needle, its one mission on this planet, is to do what? Pierce the body. A piercing needle is hollow. It pierces quicker, and without any kind of drag. It doesn’t remove any tissue, it just opens a space. Right now I’m just setting up a little bit of ink for marking, sterile lubricant, and a little bit of soap for scrubbing. When I get set up to pierce, nothing is pre-sterilized, I do it all while you wait. Gauze, the needle, jewelry, toothpick I use for marking, everything runs through this machine. It’s this button, there we go. Once it’s complete, I bring the client back. That’s when we pierce. Alright so, what I’m going to do is get lined up and once I am, I’m going to have you take a big deep breath, okay? In through your nose, slow and concentrated, out through your mouth. Okay? Your right eye’s going to water. Okay. Just let it happen. Take a deep breath all the way in. All the way out. I like to pierce on the one single exhale. Deep breath in, exhale, that’s when I pierce. First, it’s a sharp pinch. You have a lot of nerve endings on your nostril. It’s a very sharp pinch, but it subsides very rapidly. The next is you’re going to feel warmth in the area. Blood is rushing in the area. The eye immediately waters. Well done my dear! So, when you’re getting your nose pierced, it happens quickly. It’s a pinch. It’s the anticipation that makes it feel like it’s going to be a lot worse. But it isn’t. Everybody’s eyes waters. Even Bruce Lee if he got his nose pierced, his eyes would’ve watered too. If you build it up, and make it about the negativity of the pain, then I think you’re going about it all wrong. You should look at it in a positive light. Can I do this? A slight change made such a big difference. He moved it up a little bit and to the side, and I think it looks so much better. If you really want to do it, then sit down and make it happen. You can always take it out.

  1. I got my nose pierced on Friday the 13th it was very rough ! And felt like it was done wrong!! I had a hoop! And I took it out about an hour ago! Now I’m watching this !! Oh the irony! Lol

  2. All agree piercing guns are really bad they can get stuck easily but it's not meant for the nose is actually meant for the ears

  3. It's not meant for anything other than ear cuz if you get like her mouth piercing close to mouth the end what I call butterfly end would just irritate the teeth for example if you get a lip piercing with the butterfly end it'll irritate the teeth nose piercing same is that it would irritate the teeth because it's quite Sharp

  4. Okay so like from 2 weeks now I'mma get my nose pierced and low key the thing that girl said "it's just a little pinch" just like made me rethink about the pain tbh I'm excited now and get this in mind I'm 11 😂

  5. why was there a crunching noise when he put the needle through? Was it supposed to be the sound of the cartilage?
Also, I got both of my lobe piercings done with the gun…

  6. Piercing is easy asf. I pierced my ears and nose year ago and its all good. I did it with just a needle and hands. Didnt hurt at all

  7. I got my ears pierced when i was 2 i chose €60 earring but the gun got really stuck in my ear so i got them done for free😂

  8. guys I’m getting one soon, I can’t seem to get a clear answer anywhere for the size. Do they ask what size, and if so what’s the usual size?

  9. I love what he said about "you can always take it out" I agree 100% that's one of the things I love about piercings

  10. my ear piercings i have on both sides always close up so i use to the end of my earrings to re-pierce it oof so I'm used to it.

  11. Getting that ring around your ear is so pointless because it streches your ear out so far that when your 80 he’ll still have that obnoxious ring around both of his ears

  12. When he had the slow o going for piercing the top of the ear (idk how to spell it’s name but I know it) all that oily stuff was disgusting

  13. The gun literally doesn't hurt when u get it, the piercing needle hurts MUCH more while doing it, trust me I have 5 gun ones they hurt a bit after bc I have sensitive ears but the needle hurts more, that's my opinion

  14. Am I the only one who had an unexplainable urge to scream when he included the Piercing noise. The weird thing is I’m not squeamish or anything but the noise makes me so angry or something

  15. “If you really wanna do it sit down and make it happen”
Yeah right as if he knows what is like to have a Latina mom btw I’m underage so I gotta wait

  16. is it just my eyes that didn’t water? in fast they might have been a little dry?? i think i have something wrong with me

  17. I got my right side nose pierced kinda wanted it on the left but I was not strong enough on my left so I did it on the right. It is true doing it with a gun takes longer to heal and change mine toke 1-2 weeks to heal and stop the pain but I had to wait 2-3 month to change mine while my cousin did it with the needle and she had hers heal quicker then mine and faster to change. A quick reminded before getting your nose pieced don't pick a bog stud choose a small one because the bigger it is the longer it takes.

  18. My mum did mine with a needle when I was 1 year old. A cultural reason is that after 1 year when your born you MUST get your ears pierced. My mum did the second one too but I didn't put earring on for a year on the second one because of martial arts classes and they closed😂

  19. i had my nose done last week and its nothing, had it done with a gun years ago and it hurt like hell with that nasty burning feeling. get it done professionally as last year i had it done at home and the blood flow was like a murder sceen!

  20. To anyone in the comment section trying to promote the piercing gun: think of it this way. The piercing gun is a relatively new invention developed by typical mall jewelry shops. It was designed for first-timer earlobe piercings ONLY. The needle piercing method has been around for several millennia. We had a lot of time to perfect it. So honestly, if you don't want to tempt fate and minimize your chances of getting an infection, go to a professional and get your cartilage piercings done with a needle. Be kind to yourself.

  21. The first time I got my nose pierced I got it done at a hair salon that also did piercings. 😂 So as you can imagine it wasn't great, as soon as it was pierced blood ran down from my nose onto my favorite hoodie. It proceeded to bleed for more weeks after and made my brand new white iphone look like a murder happened. So after awhile with blood steady running down my face whenever my head had to be tilted forward in class, and my room having drops of blood on the floor my nose eventually pushed the piercing out. I was hesitant to get my nose pierced again so 3 years later I got the courage to do it again but this time I went to a proper piercing studio. Much better results.
